Description:
The boat "Saucy Kate". Note that the cabin is located in the rear (aft) of the boat. She was built in 1876 for Captain Charles May of Excelsior and named the "Kate' and by 1977 was known as the "Katy Mae". He had her built to try and control the steamship business on the lake giving the builder specifications so she would be faster than the "Mary" and the "May Queen".. On June 23, 1877 she was the first Lake Minnetonka steamer to have her boiler explode killing three people. She was found sunk in 72 feet of water on July 18, 1877 and the hull, boiler etc. were raised. She was rebuilt by Maurice J. Godfrey and launched on June 22, 1878 as the "Saucy Kate". She was sold a number of times until 1896 when Captain John R. Johnson purchased her as part of the nucleus of his Lake Minnetonka Transportation Company along with the "Hattie May and the "Mayflower". She was destroyed on Sept. 10, 1899 by a fire of unknown cause at Solberg's Point. At that time she was the oldest steamer on Lake Minnetonka. ADOOB by Scott McGinnis.
