Ice Boat Image Collection
Description:
The start of an iceboat race on Lake Minnetonka sometime around the turn of the century. These are Hudson river type, gaff—rigged stern steerers. These were very popular on the Hudson river in upstate New York from 1870s to early 1900s because they would race freight trains and beat them. At that time it was the fastest mode of transportation. Stern—Steerers were the dominant design until after WWII when smaller and more aerodynamically designed front—steering iceboats came into being. There are two large stern steerers on the lake still and both were manufactured by Johnson Boat Works, White Bear Lake, in the late 1920s. These boats don't look like Johnson built hulls and may have been imported from the East coast. Ice boats on Excelsior Bay. Picture from Peter Slocum 1—23—05
