Description:
Woman sitting sideways on a hammock at the Halstead house. This was known as the Hermitage. Captain Frank William Halstead lived there from the late 1850's — June 23, 1876. He was the driving force behind Lake Minnetonka Improvement Commission; Lake Navigation; and dredging the Narrows. He was the first Justice of the Peace of Minnetrista Township and performed the first marriage there. He built the steamer 'Mary'. He committed suicide due to cost overruns by tying 40 pounds of rocks around his neck and casting himself overboard by Crane Island. His brother Major George Blight Halstead was the executor of Frank's estate. He became the "The Hermit' though he was more social than Frank. He died in a fire in bed at the Hermitage on Sept. 6, 1903. The Heritage's basement was used as a bedroom and the walls were signed by visitors. The porch was added in the 1880's. Mr. Albert Loring bought the property and built a house. Mrs. Stanley Partridge (daughter of Albert Loring) acquired the house in 1925. It was sold in 1946 to General and Mrs. T. Terry Morrison who rebuilt the original house.
