Description:
Students posed in front of Excelsior Public School, 261 School Avenue, Excelsior, MN. From "Walking the Trails of History" and "Historic Excelsior"——for many years the one public school building (pictured above) in Excelsior was on this site. This building is of the classic revival style of brick/limestone masonry exterior and was built c1898—1899 after a fire destroyed the earlier wooden structure and was used for all grades until a high school was built in 1915. This building was the third school structure on this site. It was termed at the time of construction to be the finest school in rural Hennepin County. There were 30 high school students the first year. The building was spared when it was decided to built a new elementary school and was remodeled and housed the Minnetonka School District's administration offices from 1964—1996.
