Description:
Spirit Knob in Wayzata with two boats and a fisherman in front of it. Photo by Benjamin F. Upton C 1857—1860. This photo is printed in reverse. Spirit Knob was sacred to the Manitou of Scalps, and was visited at intervals by the warriors on their return from a battle with the scalps they had gotten.Rituals were performed and the scalps were always taken away and sometimes offerings of tobacco were made. The signs of Dakota worship shows this place was sacred ground. It was known among the Indians as 'Point Wakon' or "Place of the Spirits". Subsequently it was known by "Spirit Knob" by the whites. The point was bought in 1879 and the knob was leveled to its present contour is 1884. ("The Early Background of Minnetonka Beach")
