Description:
The Hotel Del Otero after the fire with stone wall in front. (burned down in 1945). This picture was taken in 1968. James J. Hill opened the Hotel Del Otero in 1885. It's location, high on hill overlooking Spring Park Bay may have inspired its name 'Del Otero' which is Spanish for 'on a knoll or hill'. In 1906 it was sold to George F. Hopkins and Company who maintained the hotel, dancing pavilion, ball park and picnic grounds. The hotel burned on July 4, 1945. "The hotel, however, was left an empty shell and a mass of smoking ruins. One section of the building——a two—story, towering structure surrounded by wide porches—was burned to the ground while the remaining section was burned to the first floor.
