Description:
Stereograph of two people walking up to the Hotel St. Louis. Includes both pictures. Can't figure out what the two men are carrying. On front is printed C.A. Zimmerman's Artistic Views, Minnesota Scenery, St. Paul. This was the first of the five largest hotels on Lake Minnetonka, opening in 1879. It overlooked Carson's Bay and St. Louis Bay. Behind the hotel were cabins for Negro servants working at the hotel or who had come with guests from the South. In the 1890's the hotel began hosting the Northwest Lawn Tennis Tournament. One of the more interesting characters in the hotel history was Charles S. Gibson. He rebuilt the hotel after a fire and "got it out of the red". Because business was bad around the turn of the century the hotel was demolished in 1907.The following year Walter W. Douglas of Quaker Oats fame, started building his home on the site of the hotel.
