Hotel Lafayette in Minnetonka Beach. James J. Hill's hotel Lafayette has it's grand opening on July 2, 1882. It was the largest hotel built on the lake able to accommodate 1,000 people. The hotel stood on a ridge that over looked the Upper Lake on one side and the Lower Lake on the other. In Sept. of 1883 a gala dinner for President Chester Arthur with 1,000 guests was held at the Lafayette. On Oct. 4,1897 the Hotel Lafayette was "totally destroyed by fire." ("Lake Minnetonka's Historic Hotel") Half of a stereoscopic picture. Picture on the other side is the Lake Park Hotel in Tonka Bay.
